“What excites me most about this program is that it gives students the opportunity to receive a meal they otherwise may not have been able to get,” said Lindsay Landers, School Nurse at North Butler CSD.
Earlier today, the North Butler CSD received 1,000 Power Snack coupons and 80 pork sticks. A program of Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, Power Snack aims to alleviate childhood hunger by providing access to nutritious foods at home. North Butler CSD is one of 125 school districts in Iowa receiving the coupons.
“Power Snack is indicative of the larger purpose of the program—empower children in food-insecure homes by teaching them how to get to the store, shop for nutritious food covered by the coupons and make their own snacks,” said Jen Sorenson, Communications Director of Iowa Select Farms.
“Oftentimes parents are working on weekends and holidays. Something simple like a ham sandwich may be the difference in preventing kids from going hungry.”
Four times throughout the school year, students identified by their schools as food-insecure will receive Power Snack coupons. Teachers may also distribute coupons as-needed to students and families throughout the school year.
“We plan on distributing Power Snack coupons and pork sticks to students who receive food through our school’s Backpack Program,” explained Landers. “We’ll also hand them out to students who are at high risk to be hungry.”
Now in its seventh year, Power Snack supports 22,751 students statewide.
